The wonder of life is explained in Genesis 1:27: man was created in the image of God. God formed man from the dust of the ground (Gen. 2:7). Prior to man, God had spoken His creation into existence ex nihilo (“out of nothing”). God made man, however, a special creation. The uniqueness of man’s creation is manifest by God breathing into man the breath of life. Likewise, the metaphor for birth is a symbolic gesture to the total sovereignty of God. From the beginning to the end, from light to darkness, mankind is the work of God’s hands (Isaiah 45:5-7).
