Rainy Day at Belmont was painted during a warm spring drizzle. It was my goal to capture the atmosphere of the day rather than the architecture, turning my attention to the subtle grays and hues of color. Note the value spectrum is rather narrow. The field study for rainy Day at Belmont was painted on location, at Gari Melcher's home, Belmont, now a National Historic Landmark in Falmouth, VA. Management of Belmont welcomes artists and I paint there often. This larger painting was completed in my studio.
