Four or five hours west of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso is the village of Safane, a matriarchal village of weavers. These women grow the cotton, spin it, dye it with local indigo and weave it. There are 14 or so patterns, all in stripes, each pattern tells a different story. I showed the women my sketches and they all tried their hand. They showed me their cloth, then gave me one to take home.
